چکیده

Weutilize neutron reflectometry (NR) to probe the amount of residual solvent in thinpolystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films spin-coated from deuterated toluene solutions onto silicon substrates. The effect of thermal treatment at temperatures belowandabove the glass transitionofPSandPMMA are examined to determine how these treatments affect the residual solvent. The parameters investigated include the total film thickness and molecular mass for PS and only thickness for PMMA. We find that the volume fractionof solvent inPMMAfilms is less thana fewpercentages, while no residual solventwasdetected inPS films. The residual solvent content of the PMMA films had a slight dependence on thickness. These results are corroborated utilizing Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. We discuss these observations in the context of a large body of seemingly conflicting literature on residual solvent in polymer thin films.

Slow Relaxation of Spin - Cast Poly ( methyl methacrylate ) Confined in Thin Films

Although the volume relaxation of bulk homopolymer glasses is thoroughly understood, many questions remain about the volume relaxation of polymers cast from solvent. Furthermore, in polymer thin films, the possible effects of confinement, surfaces and interfaces on relaxation are largely unexplored. Measurements of the film thickness of spin-cast poly(methyl methacrylate) thin films over extend...

High-throughput preparation of complex multi-scale patterns from block copolymer/homopolymer blend films.

A simple, straightforward process for fabricating multi-scale micro- and nanostructured patterns from polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) homopolymer in a preferential solvent for PS and PMMA is demonstrated. When the PS-b-P2VP/PMMA blend films were spin-coated onto a silicon wafer, PS-b-P2VP micellar arrays consisting of a PS corona and a P2VP c...

Optical properties of spin-coated Er-doped Ga1As39S60 Chalcogenide thin films

Spin-coating of Chalcogenide glasses is a cost-effective and flexible method to produce thin films applicable in photonics. In this paper Er was doped into Ga1As39S60 glass by melt quenching technique and solutions for spin coating were prepared from glass powders dissolved in Propylamine and Ethylendiamine. Substrates used were microscopic slides (refractive index of about 1.51). Applied layer...

Dewetting behavior of a block copolymer/homopolymer thin film on an immiscible homopolymer substrate.

Numerous previous studies have established that the addition of a microphase-ordered AB diblock copolymer to a thin homopolymer A (hA) film can slow, if not altogether prevent, film rupture and subsequent film dewetting on a hard substrate such as silica. However, only a few reports have examined comparable phenomena when the hA/AB blend resides on a soft B-selective surface, such as homopolyme...

Nanomechanical properties of solvent cast polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) polymer blends and self-assembled block copolymers

The nanomechanical properties of solvent-cast polymer thin films have been investigated using PeakForceTM Quantitative Nanomechanical Mapping. The samples consisted of films of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) obtained after the dewetting of toluene solution on a polymeric brush layer. Additionally, we have probed the mechanical properties of poly(styrene-b-methyl methacryl...
